Real communication versus constant connection

Hello! We just got back from a trip to sunny California. From the beaches, to the mountains, to the city, and everything in between it was fantastic! One thing we kept noticing was how many people were glued to their phones. We'd be sitting in a meadow looking up at Yosemite's breathtaking El Capitan, or at a dinner table, or anywhere else . . and the majority of people were staring at their phones.

Real communication versus constant connection

We’re always just a text or notification away from someone. But here’s the thing: Being connected doesn’t always mean we’re communicating.

We’ve all been there — having a conversation with someone who’s only half-listening while scrolling through their phone. Or maybe we're the one guilty of splitting our attention between a conversation and whatever just popped up on our screen.

Real communication happens when we’re fully present, giving someone our time, focus, and most importantly, our undivided attention. It’s not about being constantly available to every buzz of our phone, but about truly connecting with those around us, distraction-free.

So, here’s a challenge: The next time you’re with someone, try putting the phone down (all the way down!) and see what happens. You might just find the kind of connection that no app can give you.

If you’re ready to dive deeper into how powerful real communication can be — both in your personal life and relationships — I’d love to help! Let’s schedule a one-on-one coaching session to explore how improving communication can enhance your connections.

I'm looking forward to chatting with you (distraction-free, of course)!

Earlier this week I had dinner with a girlfriend who I adore. We stayed up way too late talking and laughing. I'm still not caught up on my sleep, but it left me with such a happy feeling. I have another girlfriend who I chat with almost daily, usually more than once, and my husband always knows after I've talked to her because I'm literally refreshed and smiling after. So this week I'm going to encourage you to think about the power of reaching out. Because life gets busy, doesn’t it?...

Happy Friday, readers! This isn't me on the high dive (I'm afraid of heights) . . it represents the fear I had last week doing something I've been successfully avoiding for a few years. Have you ever had an opportunity that excited you and terrified you at the same time? Recently, I said yes to something that scared me: Being a guest on a podcast for the very first time. As a life coach, I spend a lot of time helping others step out of their comfort zones, so I figured it was time to take my...

Happy World Kindness Day! I didn't realise it was a thing until I heard it on the radio this morning. Being kind to others is fantastic, obviously. But a question for you: When was the last time you were actively kind to yourself? And no, I’m not talking about treating yourself to that extra slice of cake (but go for it if you want!) I’m talking about giving yourself the gift of joy, adventure, and fun - the kind that made your heart race when you were a kid. What was that for you? Maybe a...
